Powerhouse | Cast Bronze | Covent Garden | London

Powerhouse was commissioned by Maiden Lane Limited to create a sculpture for residential and restaurant development at Bull Inn Court Covent Garden.  This site is the location of the former Charing Cross Electricity Supply Company, which supplied power to theaters across the West End in the early 1900s.

Atkins’s brief was to reflect the potent culture and heritage of the area - the result is a sculpture called Powerhouse.

Powerhouse echoes the machinery associated with the building's former use, reflecting how it moved and operated. The design incorporates cogs, levers, and pulleys, replicating items from the old power company that were salvaged from the site prior to its redevelopment.

The notion of movement in the design is also important due to the location of the artwork -  a discreet area between the Strand and Maiden Lane, Powerhouse is designed to invite curiosity and then footfall, between these two hugely busy areas Covent Garden.
