The Signaler | Corten steel | Height 500 cm | The Rushes, Loughborough, UK

A landmark. sculpture, commissioned by Loughborough University on behalf of developers, Highland Metrobrook. The forms of the sculpture are derived from garment template contours and as. such, relate to the retail environment of the location, as, well as being cognizant of human identity without acknowledging particular ethnic associations.  This was very important in a multi-cultural society, such as Loughborough, and ensured that the artworks, concept was inclusive to all aspects of the neighboring community, which helped in the objective of ownership of the artwork.

The precise location of the artwork ·was also important, as it had to act as a signature design for the new retail development The sculpture sits on three main site lines, visible from all directions and drawing passers-by into the main thoroughfare of the shopping concourse. The sculpture includes a seating area as part of the design and is used regularly by shoppers and retail holders as informal seating. The space is used throughout the day and evening and has proved to be a unique meeting point for people using the surrounding bars and restaurants.

The success of the project was also due to my close working partnership with the construction consultants, John Rowan & Partners as well as the architects. REID International.
